We start with an introductory week in London. Lectures are held in a private lecture room at the National Gallery, Tate Modern and Christie's, and introduce art historical themes which will be followed through in Venice, Florence and Rome.

The week includes a private visit to the Venetian section of the National Gallery, and advice about how to appreciate a painting. During this week students are also shown cutting-edge contemporary work in architecture (visiting Richard Rogers & Partners studio, architects of the Pompidou Centre, the Lloyds Building, the Millennium Dome and Heathrow Terminal 5), painting and sculpture (visiting a major contemporary art gallery). At a practical level there is the opportunity to learn about the commercial art world from a Christie's specialist. (Note: accommodation and meals are not provided during the period in London).
